₹110 Crore Wastewater Plant Under Fire Over Alleged Underuse

Mohali :

Former Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has raised serious concerns over a ₹110 crore tertiary wastewater treatment plant in Mohali, alleging that the project has failed to serve its intended public purpose.
Bedi criticised the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), stating that despite heavy investment, treated sewage water is still being discharged into drains instead of being reused for non-drinking purposes.
He said Mohali already operates a 15 MGD sewage treatment plant, but even after treatment, the water is not being effectively recycled. The newly built 5 MGD tertiary treatment facility, according to him, was meant to further purify water for reuse in parks, road cleaning, toilets, green belts and industrial needs.
However, Bedi alleged that no proper distribution network has been developed, resulting in wastage of treated water while potable groundwater continues to be used for maintenance work.
Highlighting the city’s rising groundwater stress, he said Mohali urgently needs water recycling systems to reduce dependence on tube wells.
Calling the project a “paper achievement” if not properly implemented, Bedi urged authorities to immediately create a reuse infrastructure so that treated water can be utilised for public services.
He warned that failure to act could deepen Mohali’s future water crisis despite such large-scale investments.
