A grim picture of the growing drug crisis emerged from Amb Sahib Colony near Phase-11, Mohali, where several families alleged that drug addiction has devastated their lives, claiming the lives of numerous young men and leaving parents, siblings, and children shattered.
On Wednesday, former Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu visited the colony and met families who have allegedly lost their loved ones to drug abuse. Emotional scenes unfolded as mothers, sisters, and other family members broke down while recounting their experiences and appealed for immediate government intervention.
Residents said the colony, largely inhabited by migrant workers and daily-wage earners, has witnessed a sharp rise in drug addiction among youth. Families alleged that addicted youngsters frequently demand money, damage household belongings, and even sell valuables to sustain their addiction. Many claimed that fear and helplessness have become a part of daily life.
During the interaction, local residents alleged that drugs are being sold openly in the area and that those who raise their voice against drug peddlers often face threats and intimidation. Some residents claimed that almost every day another young life is being lost to drug abuse.
Addressing the gathering, Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu questioned the Punjab Government’s claims of creating a “drug-free Punjab,” stating that the ground reality in Amb Sahib Colony tells a different story. He said the continued loss of young lives highlights the need for stronger action against drug trafficking networks.
The former mayor also interacted with two youths who admitted to struggling with addiction. He assured residents that efforts would be made to bring affected youth together and facilitate their admission to the de-addiction centre in Sector-66 for treatment and rehabilitation.
Sidhu further demanded compensation for families who have lost children due to drug addiction and called for government employment for one member of each affected family. He urged the administration to launch an intensive anti-drug campaign and ensure strict action against those involved in drug trafficking.
Several heartbreaking accounts were shared during the visit. One woman alleged that she had lost both her sons to drug addiction, while another said her son’s death had left behind two young children. A grieving father, who had recently performed the last rites of his 27-year-old son, claimed that nearly half of the colony’s youth were affected by drugs in some form.
Warning of further agitation, Sidhu said that if concrete action is not taken within the next 15 days, local residents would be forced to launch a road blockade protest. He urged the government and law enforcement agencies to act decisively to curb drug trafficking and help addicted youth rebuild their lives.

Residents have appealed for immediate intervention, rehabilitation support for addicted youth, and stringent action against those responsible for the illegal drug trade in the area.
