Consumer Commission imposes Rs 10,000.00 fine on Turkish Airlines

Chandigarh: The District Consumer Commission, Chandigarh has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.00 on Turkish Airlines in a case of non-refund of tickets on cancellation of flights. The Consumer Commission has directed the airline to refund 600.00 Euros and also pay Rs 7,000 as litigation costs.
The commission has given this decision against the airline on the complaint of Uday Veer Garg, a resident of Sector-21. Garg said in the complaint that he had booked a return ticket from Berlin to New Delhi. This ticket was for March 1, 2021 while the return flight was for March 30, 2021. But on 15 February 2021, the airline informed him through e-mail that the ticket has been canceled and he can take a refund of 606.46 Euros (about 53 thousand Indian rupees). Garg called the helpline number of the airline several times but did not get the refund. He sent a legal notice to the airline but did not get a positive response. Finally, he filed a case against the airline in the Consumer Commission.
The airline said that some international flights were canceled due to Corona situations in India. In such a situation, the airline had given two options to the passenger, either they could take a refund or they could take a voucher which they could use for flight booking. But the complainant opted for the voucher. Even after this the complainant did not give his bank details to the airline due to which he could not get the refund. Therefore, the airline sought to dismiss the complaint.
But after hearing the arguments of both the parties, the Consumer Commission ruled in favor of the complainant and directed the airline to refund 600.00 Euros.
