Mohali: Trees play a significant role in reducing erosion and moderating the climate. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store large quantities of carbon in their tissues.
Trees provide shade and shelter, fruit for food as well as having many other uses. In parts of the world, forests are shrinking as trees are cleared to increase the amount of land available for agriculture. Because of their longevity and usefulness, trees have always been revered, with sacred groves in various cultures, and they play a role in many of the world’s mythologies.
On the other hand, dead trees pose a safety risk, especially during high winds and severe storms. Giant old trees in Mohali have dried up and seem like they might collapse any moment, thus endangering lives of commuters, pedestrians and residents.
It is pertinent to mention here that surprisingly, no helpline has been established by the Administration on which Mohali residents can give a call to get overgrown trees in their vicinity pruned. The authorities are lethargic when it comes to identifying trees, which are a hazard and can get uprooted anytime, thus causing damage to life and property. It’s time for officials concerned to wake up and take steps to solve the issue well on time to avoid any further loss of property or life.
