Mohali: Street vendors could be seen daily at same spots doing business as a result roads get choked due to vendors.
Residents added, encroachment on road sides, public places, market corridors, parking lots and even on spaces under trees is rampant in Mohali. Punishment and heavy fines on vendors operating from non designated spaces may help to prevent encroachments in Mohali.
Street vendors should be allocated spaces so that they remain in particular zone. Residents added, we understand that street vendors too have to earn their livelihood by selling daily use commodities on rehris or outside shops in corridors.
Residents wished teams should be deployed for regular checking of encroachments on the main roads which could help control road accidents, traffic police never acts against such rehris parked on road sides and said there should be an operational helpline for the people to complain about encroachments.
Residents added, it becomes difficult to pass through corridors of markets in Mohali due to encroachments by most of the traders.
Often, encroachers receive advance information about arrival of enforcement staff and they run towards residential areas. Anti encroachment drives should be conducted on random basis every day from noon to 10 PM.
Special drives to remove hawkers, vendors and squatters must be launched by the civic body. Street Vendors Act should be implemented strictly by the Municipal Corporation Mohali.
