The CISF Coastal Cyclothon 2025, a pioneering initiative aimed at covering India’s extensive coastline of 6,553 km, has reached a major milestone as it completes over 3,300 km, marking the halfway point of its historic journey. This unique event, which began its journey from Lakhpat in Gujarat and Bhakkali in West Bengal, is not only promoting coastal security awareness but also encouraging active participation from local fishing communities in maintaining vigilance over threats like the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and explosives through the sea.
With a focus on fostering better coordination between local communities and law enforcement agencies, CISF personnel have been organizing public interaction events, which have seen enthusiastic participation from various fishing communities. These include the Kharwa and Koli fisherman communities on the western coast, as well as the Kaibartas, Nolia, Jalaripeta, Thota Veedi, and Eguvapeta communities on the eastern coast. The interactions have provided a valuable platform for these communities to share their unique experiences and livelihood aspects, highlighting their critical role as the nation’s first line of defense along the coastline. As a recognition of their invaluable contributions, they have been honored as “Tat Praharis” or coastal sentinels.
In addition to the community interactions, the event has also featured cultural programs that showcase the vibrant diversity of coastal cultures. A significant number of youth, especially school children, have shown their support by cycling alongside the participants for short distances, reinforcing the unity and commitment towards the cause.
