Mohali :
Hindu leaders in Mohali have called for the closure of all meat shops during the upcoming Chaitra Navratri festival, beginning March 30. Dr. Bhupinder Sharma, prominent leaders, have formally appealed to the district administration to shut down meat shops for the nine-day celebration to maintain the sanctity of the occasion and ensure cleanliness across the district.
In letter to the Deputy Commissioner Mohali, both leaders emphasized the religious importance of the Chaitra Navratri and Hindu New Year. The festival, which honors Goddess Durga and her nine avatars, is observed with fasting, prayer, and reverence, culminating on April 6, the birth anniversary of Lord Ram.
The leaders highlighted that the closure of meat shops would not only preserve the spiritual atmosphere during this sacred period but also support hygiene and cleanliness initiatives in the district.
Dr. Sharma further explained that Navratri, known as ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit, is one of the four major Navratris observed each year, with Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri being the most widely celebrated.
The call for the closure of meat shops has gained traction as the Chaitra Navratri overlaps with the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr this year, adding an extra layer of significance to the period. Dutt and Sharma’s appeal aims to foster a harmonious environment for both the Hindu community and others in the district during this important time.
Representatives from the Shri Gopal Mata Ambika Devi Gaushala Seva Samiti and Rashtriya Gau Seva Gaushala Sangh were also present in support of the request, showing a united front for the cause. The district administration’s response to this call is eagerly awaited.
