Deputy Mayor Bedi Issues Ultimatum to GMADA Over Waste Land Allocation, Threatens Protest

THE AMAN SANDESH TIMES

Mohali :

Amid mounting concerns over Mohali’s worsening waste management crisis, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has issued a strong ultimatum to the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), demanding the allocation of land for garbage disposal within 15 working days. Failure to comply, he warned, would result in a protest outside the office of GMADA’s Chief Administrator.

During a meeting with GMADA Chief Administrator Vishesh Sarangal on Thursday, Bedi submitted a formal letter stressing the urgency of the matter. He stated that Sarangal had assured him of swift action following a report from the Chief Engineer.

In the letter, Bedi pointed out that the Municipal Corporation had earlier used a dumping site near Phase 8B, which was shut down over a year ago following a court order. Since then, garbage has been piling up across various parts of the city, putting immense pressure on the Corporation’s collection infrastructure, particularly at the RMC points. He cited Shahi Majra and Sector 77’s Judge Colony as areas facing acute problems.

Bedi also alleged that garbage from GMADA-managed areas, private housing societies, and even neighboring Balongi was being dumped within Mohali MC limits, worsening the situation. In some locations, heaps of waste have reportedly caught fire, creating serious environmental and health risks for residents.

He criticized GMADA for selling properties worth billions while failing to allocate a single parcel of land for basic civic needs. Bedi reiterated that all land in the area is under GMADA’s jurisdiction, leaving the Municipal Corporation with no resources of its own for waste disposal. Despite this, the public ire is being directed at the Corporation and its councillors.

Bedi further stated that he had previously raised the issue with the Chief Minister, other ministers, and the Deputy Commissioner, but no action had followed. Calling the current letter a “final warning,” he vowed to launch a sit-in protest at the GMADA office with fellow councillors if the issue remains unresolved, holding GMADA and the Punjab government responsible for any fallout.
