Cow Protection Committee Seeks Land for Cow Hospital, Meets DC Komal Mittal

Mohali

A delegation of Gau Grass Seva Samiti, Mohali met Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal today, seeking allotment of around 10 acres of panchayat/common land on lease as per government norms for setting up a dedicated “Cow Hospital and Gaushala” for the treatment and care of injured and sick cows.

Committee secretary Harkesh Singh said that during the outbreak of lumpy skin disease, when no gaushala was ready to admit infected cows, the then DC Mohali had provided a temporary shelter near the old DC office in Phase-1. From there, the Samiti rescued ailing cows from the streets, provided them free treatment, and later shifted them to gaushalas once they recovered.

For the past two years, the Samiti has been actively treating accident-hit and sick cattle at the Phase-1 cow hospital with the help of doctors, staff, and medicines. Presently, the facility is providing round-the-clock free treatment and care for around 206 cattle, of which about 30 have fully recovered. However, due to overcrowding in existing gaushalas, even healthy cows are not being taken in, causing difficulty in accommodating new rescues.

The Samiti has so far treated 1,055 cattle at the hospital and, overall, since November 2020, has rescued and treated 3,309 cattle across Mohali and nearby areas. It also operates two cow ambulances and runs a dedicated helpline number 73802-73902, which receives three to four calls daily about injured or sick cows.

The delegation requested urgent allotment of land to expand services and continue free treatment. The Samiti also assured readiness to pay lease rent as per government instructions.

Appreciating the committee’s efforts, DC Komal Mittal assured that the matter would be taken up on priority so that land could be provided at the earliest to establish the cow hospital and continue the ongoing service for injured and sick cattle.
