Ashok Goyal, wife of former Additional Advocate General (AAG) of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Krishna Kumar Goyal, was allegedly strangled to death at their residence in Phase-5, Mohali. Her body was found inside the house, while the domestic help present at the time of the incident was found tied to a chair and has been taken into police custody.
The incident came to light on Monday morning when a maid arrived for work and saw the domestic help tied to a chair. She immediately alerted the police. According to preliminary investigations, the police suspect a case of robbery. The assailants allegedly looted jewellery and cash from the house and killed Ashok Goyal when she resisted.
A forensic team visited the spot and collected evidence. Police said the crime took place around 11 pm on Monday night. At the time of the incident, only one domestic help was present in the house, whose role is being considered suspicious.
The detained domestic help has been identified as Neeraj, around 25 years old, who had been working with the Goyal family for nearly nine years. He is being questioned intensively.
Police are also scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the accused. It has been reported that Krishna Kumar Goyal was in Muscat (Oman) at the time of the incident, visiting his daughter. Police say the case is being investigated from all angles.
