Mohali :
Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu has proposed the construction of a well-planned dog shelter on vacant land owned by the Municipal Corporation along the Chappar Chiri Link Road. He stated that the old garbage dumping site will not be revived and the land has remained unused for a long time.
The Mayor informed that the Municipal Corporation already owns around 10–12 acres at the site and recently an additional 400–500 acres has also come under its jurisdiction. Considering the rising number of stray dogs in the city and the inconvenience caused to residents, he suggested that a properly organized shelter and hostel for stray dogs could be developed there.
He emphasized that stray dogs roaming on streets often create difficulties for children, women, and senior citizens. However, he clarified that the solution is not to remove animals but to make proper and humane arrangements for their care. He added that if the government allots the land, his foundation is fully prepared to construct and maintain the shelter using its own resources.
Mayor Sidhu said that if GMADA identifies and hands over the land, the available 10–12 acres can be utilized for establishing facilities such as dog registration and veterinary care. He reiterated that if the government does not take the initiative, his foundation stands ready to undertake the project independently.
Responding to allegations regarding the gaushala operating in Balongi, the Mayor said the cow shelter has been established legally and stray cattle are being cared for responsibly. He stated that fresh fodder is provided daily and veterinary facilities are available. He also clarified that no financial assistance is taken from the government and all expenses, including lease costs, are borne independently.
Highlighting broader development plans, Mayor Sidhu pointed out that hundreds of acres of vacant land are available in Mohali and should be utilized in a planned manner. He proposed developing a golf course, indoor and outdoor stadiums, sports tracks, and designated grounds or lakes for large religious and cultural events such as Dussehra and Chhath Puja.
Appealing to the government to rise above political differences, he called for a long-term development plan to transform Mohali into a modern, well-equipped city and a hub for sports and tourism.
