
Chandigarh : Punjab is set to host the prestigious Asian Champions Trophy for the first time, marking a major milestone in the state’s sporting history. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann made the announcement while highlighting key achievements in the sports sector during four years of AAP governance.
The Chief Minister said that the international hockey event will be in Mohali and Jalandhar, two cities known for their strong sporting culture and infrastructure. He added that the opening match is likely to be held on October 26 or 27, although the final schedule and other modalities are yet to be officially confirmed.
Calling it a proud moment for Punjab, Mann emphasized the state’s deep-rooted connection with hockey, which has produced several legendary players for the country. He said hosting such a high-profile tournament will not only boost the morale of budding players but also strengthen Punjab’s position as a hub for international sports events.
To ensure the successful of the tournament, the state government is planning to upgrade existing sports infrastructure. Modern facilities, improved stadium conditions, and better training amenities are expected to be developed in the coming months to meet international standards.
In addition to the Asian Champions Trophy, Mann revealed that Punjab will also host a Four-Nation Hockey Championship every year.
The proposal has reportedly been supported by the concerned hockey association, which has assured regular of the tournament in the state. The government is currently working on finalizing the name of the annual cup and will soon submit detailed infrastructure plans.
The move is expected to significantly promote hockey at the grassroots level while attracting global attention to Punjab’s sporting capabilities. With back-to-back international events on the horizon, the state aims to revive its legacy as the powerhouse of Indian hockey and inspire the next generation of players.
