Mohali :
A major electricity billing lapse in the Mohali-1 Special Sub Division of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has come under scrutiny after an 89-year-old resident flagged grossly inflated bills issued without actual meter readings. The complaint has raised alarm for more than 8,500 consumers who may have received similar erroneous bills.
H.K. Aggarwal, a super senior citizen from Phase 2 and a PSPCL consumer (A/C No. 3000141485), lodged a formal complaint with the PSPCL Chairman, Patiala, and the Senior Executive Engineer, Mohali Sub Division. He described the situation as a “serious blunder causing harassment to thousands of consumers.”
Aggarwal stated that his electricity bill for the period 22 October 2025 to 10 December 2025 was calculated at 623 units, amounting to ₹5,360, despite his actual meter reading showing only 175 units consumed. Under the Punjab Government’s subsidised power scheme, he qualified for zero payment for this consumption level.
He further pointed out that media reports indicate over 8,500 consumers may have received similarly inflated bills due to incorrect or missing meter readings.
This serious mistake has caused unnecessary harassment, torture, and hardship,” Aggarwal wrote, urging immediate corrective steps including the withdrawal of incorrect bills, verification of readings, and a departmental inquiry to fix accountability.
His complaint demands:
Immediate cancellation of faulty bills
Proper verification of meter readings
A thorough investigation into the lapse
Accountability of responsible officials
Preventive mechanisms to avoid recurrence
The issue has triggered widespread concern, especially among senior citizens and low-consumption households benefiting from the state’s free power scheme.
Residents are now awaiting PSPCL’s response and the initiation of corrective measures. The matter is expected to be escalated within the department for investigation and resolution.
