Police Launch ‘Abhedya’ App to Block Threat Calls

When scammers dialled Haryana DGP and his wife hoping to trap them in digital arrest bids - The Tribune

Mohali : Haryana Police Director General Ajay Singhal on today launched ‘Abhedya’, a first-of-its-kind mobile application in India designed to block suspicious threat calls, extortion messages, stalking attempts, and harmful digital content before they reach users.
The app aims to strengthen digital safety by proactively filtering potentially dangerous communications, offering citizens protection against rising cyber threats. The launch comes amid growing concerns over online scams and extortion cases in the state.
Sharing a personal experience during the press briefing, DGP Singhal revealed that he himself narrowly escaped a “digital arrest” scam. He received a call displaying the image of a police inspector, with the caller falsely claiming that an arrest warrant had been issued against him. However, Singhal quickly identified the fraud after noticing that the number originated from Pakistan, as it carried the +92 country code.
“When I pointed out that the call was from Pakistan, the caller immediately disconnected, but not before using abusive language,” he said.
He further disclosed that his wife had also received a similar call. “She brought the phone to me, thinking it was an official call.
I immediately told her not to answer it, as it was from Pakistan,” he added, highlighting how convincing such scams can be.
Officials noted that Haryana recorded 178 extortion calls in 2024 and 107 in 2025 so far, underlining the urgency for technological intervention. The ‘Abhedya’ app is expected to play a crucial role in curbing cybercrime and enhancing public safety.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and make use of such tools to protect themselves from increasingly sophisticated digital fraud attempts.
