New Delhi : The Supreme Court of India has raised serious concerns over the growing trend of instantly uploading mobile phone videos on social media, observing that such practices can pose a threat to a fair trial.
The remarks were made by a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on today.
The petition alleged that police authorities often upload videos and photographs of accused persons on social media platforms, potentially influencing public perception and creating bias even before the trial begins.
The court noted that in today’s digital age, “every person with a mobile phone has become media,” highlighting the widespread and immediate impact of such content.
The Bench advised petitioner Hemendra Patel to wait for the outcome of ongoing guidelines related to police media briefings, which are expected to cover social media conduct as well.
The observation underscores the judiciary’s concern over maintaining the integrity of the legal process amid the rapid spread of information online.
