ADC Sonam Chaudhary Chairs Senior Citizens Welfare Meeting

Mohali :

A district-level committee meeting for the welfare of senior citizens was held under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Sonam Chaudhary at the District Administrative Complex.
The meeting reviewed facilities and welfare measures being provided to senior citizens across the district and directed departments to ensure priority services in healthcare, banking, police assistance, and other government services.
Focus on priority services for elderly
The ADC instructed officials to ensure that senior citizens are given priority at hospitals, banks, pension services, and service centers. She stressed that dedicated counters for the elderly must be made more efficient and accessible.
She also emphasized timely resolution of complaints related to police and other departments, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for senior citizens.
Legal awareness on property gift deeds
During the meeting, officials also highlighted legal aspects related to the cancellation of gift deeds of property transferred by senior citizens to their children.
It was clarified that the Maintenance Tribunal can cancel a gift deed only if it clearly includes a condition of maintenance or care of the elderly. Without such a condition, cancellation is not possible solely on the basis of family disputes.
The administration advised senior citizens to carefully understand legal provisions and consult experts before transferring property.
Intergenerational bonding and awareness drive
The Education Department was directed to promote “intergenerational bonding” activities in schools and colleges to strengthen respect and understanding between youth and the elderly.
The ADC also stressed the importance of spreading awareness about the National Elderly Helpline 14567 to ensure timely assistance to senior citizens in need.
Call for coordinated efforts
Sonam Chaudhary urged all departments to work in coordination for effective implementation of welfare schemes for senior citizens, stating that ensuring dignity, safety, and care for the elderly remains a top priority of the administration.
Officials from various departments and members of the district-level committee attended the meeting.
