BJP Targets MLA Kulwant Singh Over Role in Mohali MC House Meeting

Mohali:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused MLA Kulwant Singh of overshadowing Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana during the first House meeting of the Mohali Municipal Corporation, alleging political interference and promoting dynasty politicAddressing the media, BJP District President Sanjeev Vashisht claimed that the Mayor remained largely silent during the proceedings while MLA Kulwant Singh responded to most of the questions raised by councillors. He said the MLA remained actively involved throughout the meeting, giving the impression that he was leading the civic body’s affairs instead of the elected Mayor.Vashisht alleged that the MLA was not allowing his son, Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana, to function independently or establish his own leadership. He said the incident raised concerns about the autonomy of the Municipal Corporation and the democratic functioning of the elected House. The BJP leader further stated that if Kulwant Singh intended to answer civic issues and take key decisions himself, he should have contested for the Mayor’s post rather than placing his son in the position. He alleged that the developments reflected “dynasty politics” within the ruling party.Questioning the MLA’s participation in civic affairs, Vashisht claimed that Kulwant Singh had rarely attended Municipal Corporation House meetings over the last four years but became highly active immediately after his son assumed the office of Mayor. He said elected representatives should be allowed to perform their constitutional responsibilities independently and without political interference. Vashisht alleged that the first House meeting had created an impression that the Municipal Corporation was being controlled from behind the scenes rather than being led by the elected Mayor.
