Former Deputy Mayor of Mohali Kuljit Singh Bedi has written to the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Partap Singh Bajwa, urging him to strongly raise the serious issue of solid waste management in Mohali during the upcoming session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
In his letter, Bedi stated that Mohali, known as the mini capital of Punjab and one of its prominent cities, still does not have a permanent dumping ground. He pointed out that the earlier dumping ground was closed following orders from the court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT), but the government has yet to provide any permanent and practical solution.
Bedi alleged that the Municipal Corporation is dumping garbage outside RMC points and other vacant places across the city, leading to increasing filth, foul smell, and the risk of diseases. He said the issue is directly linked to the health of city residents and the environment.
In his letter, he also mentioned that Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh had himself demanded in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha that the Solid Waste Management Project at Samgauli be made operational. On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Dera Bassi Kuljit Singh Randhawa opposed the proposal, stating that it would adversely affect 15–20 villages. Bedi said that due to the conflicting stand of the government’s own MLAs, this important issue remains unresolved, and the people of Mohali are paying the price.
Kuljit Singh Bedi further claimed that Mohali’s garbage is being dumped into seasonal drains, posing not only a serious environmental threat but also raising legal concerns, as waste cannot be dumped into water bodies.
He appealed to Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa to raise this serious public issue forcefully when the Punjab Vidhan Sabha session begins and seek a clear response from the government on when and how a permanent solution for Mohali’s solid waste management will be implemented.
Bedi expressed hope that this important issue concerning the health of Mohali residents and environmental protection would be taken up seriously in the Vidhan Sabha.
Bedi further informed that Partap Singh Bajwa assured him that he would raise the issue in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and strongly voice the demand of the people of Mohali so that a permanent solution to the problem can be found.
