Sanitation workers under the banner of the Sanitation Employees Union organized a protest rally in Dera Bassi on Thursday against the alleged lathi-charge on sanitation workers who were demonstrating in Barnala over their pending demands.
A large number of sanitation workers and union representatives participated in the rally, raising slogans against the state government and police administration. The protesters demanded a fair and impartial inquiry into the incident, strict action against the officials responsible, and the immediate fulfillment of the workers’ pending demands.
Addressing the gathering, union leaders said that the use of force against employees holding a peaceful protest was against democratic principles. They urged the government to engage in dialogue with the workers and address their grievances through constructive discussions.
The impact of the Punjab bandh was also visible in Dera Bassi, with several markets, commercial establishments, and some educational institutions remaining closed. However, essential services continued to function normally.
The protesters warned that if their demands were not addressed promptly, they would intensify their agitation in the coming days. The rally concluded peacefully, while adequate police personnel remained deployed to maintain law and order.
