Chandigarh:
A bomb threat email was sent to several schools in Chandigarh and Panjab University on Tuesday morning, prompting police and security agencies to launch searches across the targeted locations.
The email, sent at around 7:50 am on August 11, threatened bomb blasts at schools, police stations and parts of Panjab University. It also warned people against attending Independence Day programmes on August 15.The email specifically mentioned the Student Centre, Vice-Chancellor’s Office and Gandhi Bhawan at Panjab University. It also contained slogans supporting the separatist Khalistan demand and referred to making Chandigarh part of Khalistan.
Following the threat, police teams, bomb disposal personnel and dog squads reached the four schools mentioned in the email and conducted extensive searches inside the campuses and surrounding areas. No bomb or suspicious object was found during the checks, officials said.
Security agencies have launched a technical investigation to trace the source of the email and identify the person behind it. Police are also examining whether the threat is genuine or was sent with the intention of creating panic.
The incident comes amid several previous bomb threat emails targeting public institutions in Chandigarh, including schools, courts, bus stands, passport offices and the Punjab Secretariat. Authorities have stepped up security measures in view of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
