National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Special Monitor Dr. Pradeepta Kumar Nayak today visited the Ghaggar Leprosy Ashram near Dera Bassi and interacted with persons affected by leprosy residing there.
During the visit, Dr. Nayak enquired about their well-being, healthcare facilities, availability of medicines, living conditions and other basic needs. He stressed that protecting the dignity and human rights of persons affected by leprosy and ensuring their equal participation in society is essential.
Dr. Nayak directed the concerned officials to take necessary steps to ensure that eligible residents of the Ashram receive benefits under various government welfare schemes. He also emphasised better coordination among departments so that government services reach beneficiaries without delay.
He reviewed the facilities available at the Ashram and sought details from health officials regarding healthcare services being provided to the residents. Officials briefed him on measures for the early detection, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of persons affected by leprosy.
The NHRC Special Monitor asked health authorities to address the concerns of leprosy-affected persons with sensitivity and ensure access to essential healthcare, medicines and basic amenities. He also stressed continued efforts towards their social inclusion and protection of their rights.
Acting Civil Surgeon Dr. Girish Dogra, SMO Dr. Dharminder Singh, District Leprosy Officer Dr. Jayati Batra and other Health Department officials were present during the visit.
