Chandigarh :
Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India and former MP, today released a report titled “Beyond Awareness: What University Students Know, Feel and Do About Mental Health,” prepared by Ketawa – Centre for Behaviour Change, Chandigarh.
The report highlights a significant gap between mental health awareness and seeking professional help among university students. According to the survey, 93.5% of students recognised mental health as being as important as physical health, but only 15.9% had consulted a mental health professional. Meanwhile, 43.1% cited a lack of information about where to seek help, while 31% identified stigma or fear of judgement as barriers. Only 36.2% were aware of nearby mental health services.
Releasing the report, Jain stressed the need for families, educational institutions and society to take student mental health seriously and ensure accessible, compassionate support.
Former Chandigarh Mayor Davesh Moudgil emphasised a whole-campus approach to mental well-being, including greater awareness, stronger referral systems and support from faculty and peers.
Dr. Nidhi Jaswal, Founder and CEO of Ketawa, said awareness must translate into action, with students having access to confidential, non-judgemental support.
Prof. Kumool Abbi, Dr. Gaurav Gaur and Dr. Sukhbir Singh were also present at the event.
