AAP Renominates Kulwant Singh from SAS Nagar for 2027 Punjab Assembly Elections

Mohali :

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has once again placed its confidence in sitting MLA Kulwant Singh by renominating him from the SAS Nagar (Mohali) Assembly constituency for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. His name features in the party’s first list of 40 candidates announced on Saturday.

Kulwant Singh has a political career spanning nearly three decades, beginning with his election as a municipal councillor from Ward No. 21 in Mohali in 1995. He served as a councillor from 1995 to 2000 and subsequently held the positions of junior and senior vice-president of the civic body.

In November 2000, he became president of the Municipal Council and continued in the position until November 2005. Following the upgradation of Mohali to a Municipal Corporation, Singh became its first Mayor on August 28, 2015, and remained in office until April 2020.

He also contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Fatehgarh Sahib but could not secure victory.

Political Journey Across Different Parties

Kulwant Singh’s political journey has witnessed associations with different political parties. In 2014, he contested the Lok Sabha elections on a Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance ticket. He later joined the SAD but was expelled in January 2021 following differences over the municipal elections.

Subsequently, he formed the Azad Group in Mohali’s civic politics. In December 2021, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party in the presence of Bhagwant Mann and Raghav Chadha and was later announced as the party’s candidate from Mohali.

Defeated Congress Veteran Balbir Singh Sidhu in 2022

In the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, Kulwant Singh registered a decisive victory from SAS Nagar on an AAP ticket, defeating three-time MLA and former Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu of the Congress.

Kulwant Singh secured 77,134 votes against Sidhu’s 43,037, winning by a margin of 34,097 votes. His victory came amid AAP’s sweeping performance in the state, where the party won 92 of the 117 Assembly seats.

Real Estate Business and Wealth

Apart from politics, Kulwant Singh is associated with the real estate sector and Janta Land Promoters Limited (JLPL), where he has served as managing director. According to his 2022 election affidavit, he has business interests in real estate and related companies.

During the 2022 Assembly elections, his wealth attracted considerable attention. An Indian Express profile published in April 2025 described him as Punjab’s richest legislator, reporting declared assets of approximately Rs. 1,000 crore.

In April 2025, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at properties linked to him as part of its investigation into the Pearl Agrotech Corporation Limited (PACL) case. The searches were part of the ongoing investigation and should not be construed as a finding of wrongdoing against him.

During his tenure as an MLA, Singh also served on several Punjab Vidhan Sabha committees, including those dealing with Local Bodies, Subordinate Legislation, Public Accounts, Questions and References, and Estimates. According to the Assembly’s official profile, he is the Chairman of the Committee on Local Bodies for 2025-26.

With his renomination, Kulwant Singh will now seek a second consecutive victory from SAS Nagar in the 2027 Assembly elections.

The AAP’s first list of 40 candidates also includes Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann from Dhuri, Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan from Kotkapura, Sanjeev Arora from Ludhiana West and Ajitpal Singh Kohli from Patiala.
