Chandigarh :
Amid growing complaints of frequent power cuts during the summer season, Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Bunty and Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta met with Arun Kumar Verma, Director of private power distribution company CPDL (Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited), to address ongoing electricity issues in the city.
During the meeting, the city leaders conveyed residents’ frustration over unscheduled power outages and poor response from helpline numbers. They highlighted that many helplines at substations are either unreachable or go unanswered. They also raised concerns over the lack of coordination between the electricity department and the Municipal Corporation, particularly during tasks like tree trimming near power lines.
Bunty and Mehta emphasized the urgent need for better coordination between local councillors and field-level officials such as SDOs and JEs to ensure timely response and effective service delivery.
In response, CPDL Director Arun Verma assured that since taking over power distribution operations on February 1, the company has been working to resolve fundamental issues. He acknowledged a shortage of staff but said efforts are underway to address it through outsourcing and fresh recruitment.
Verma added that divisions covering sectors 20, 30, 36, 42, and others—especially Divisions 4, 9, and 10—are being reinforced with additional manpower. Accountability and responsiveness of employees will also be improved.
To streamline grievance redressal, CPDL plans to organize public camps across different areas. Additionally, a WhatsApp group will be created for all city councillors to receive timely alerts on planned shutdowns and raise issues directly.
Reaffirming their commitment to the city, Senior Deputy Mayor Bunty and Deputy Mayor Mehta stated, “As elected representatives, our duty is to ensure residents receive quality services. We will continue to raise these concerns at every platform until they are resolved.”
