SIR of Voter Lists Likely from April; Chandigarh, Punjab Officials Told to Prepare

Chandigarh:

The Election Commission of India has directed officials in 22 states and Union Territories, including Punjab and Chandigarh, to complete preparations for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which is likely to commence in April.

Sources said electoral authorities in Punjab and Chandigarh have been asked to ensure full readiness for the large-scale exercise aimed at updating voter lists ahead of future elections. Chief Electoral Officers have been instructed to finalise logistics, deploy adequate manpower, and strengthen verification mechanisms at the earliest.

The Special Intensive Revision is a comprehensive drive that involves door-to-door verification by polling officials to add newly eligible voters, remove ineligible or duplicate names, and rectify errors in the electoral rolls. The exercise is considered vital for maintaining accurate and transparent voter records.

Officials indicated that special focus will be given to urban centres, including Chandigarh and major cities across Punjab, where migration and fresh registrations are comparatively high. Rural areas will also be covered extensively to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the process.

Authorities have assured that adequate arrangements are being made to conduct the revision smoothly without disrupting routine administrative work. Citizens will also be provided opportunities to verify and update their details during the revision period.

The drive forms part of the Commission’s nationwide effort to strengthen the electoral system and ensure clean and updated voter lists ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
