Himachal Hikes Entry Fee to ₹170 for Out-of-State Vehicles from April 1; Political Row Erupts

Chandigarh:

The Government of Himachal Pradesh has announced a sharp increase in vehicle entry fees for out-of-state vehicles, drawing strong political reactions and raising concerns among travelers from the Tricity region.

Under the revised rates effective April 1, private cars, jeeps and vans entering Himachal Pradesh from neighboring Punjab and Chandigarh will be required to pay ₹170 as entry fee — more than double the earlier charge of ₹70.

The Bharatiya Janata Party termed the move “anti-public and anti-tourism,” alleging that it could discourage visitors to popular hill destinations such as Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala, particularly during the peak summer season.

Tour operators and transporters in Punjab and Chandigarh expressed apprehension that the hike may lead to higher travel fares and increased goods transportation costs, affecting both tourists and traders. Families from the region frequently travel to Himachal Pradesh for weekend getaways and vacations.

State authorities, however, defended the decision, stating that the revised fee structure is aimed at augmenting revenue and maintaining road infrastructure amid a steady rise in tourist inflow.

The new charges will be collected at interstate entry barriers across the state, while vehicles registered in Himachal Pradesh will remain exempt.

The move is expected to significantly impact tourism flow from Punjab and Chandigarh, which together account for a major share of visitors to Himachal Pradesh each year.
