Future Cities Must Be Citizen-Focused and Sustainable: Kataria

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Friday emphasized the need for citizen-centric planning while shaping the cities of the future, stating that urban development must focus on improving the well-being, convenience and overall quality of life of residents.

Addressing the Urban Innovation Summit in Chandigarh, Kataria said balanced, sustainable and inclusive planning is essential for creating modern urban spaces that meet the needs of citizens. He highlighted that well-planned cities can become vibrant and livable environments where people have easy access to essential services, public facilities and a healthy environment.

The Administrator noted that thoughtful planning, strong infrastructure and sustainable development policies are critical in building future-ready cities. According to him, such planning not only improves everyday life for residents but also creates opportunities for economic growth and social development.

Kataria said cities must adopt innovative approaches to address challenges related to rapid urbanisation, environmental sustainability and efficient service delivery. He stressed that the ultimate goal of urban development should be to ensure comfort, accessibility and a high standard of living for all sections of society.

The Urban Innovation Summit witnessed participation from more than 150 delegates and over 30 speakers, including government officials, urban planners, policy experts and representatives from various organisations. The event provided a platform for discussions on innovative ideas and solutions for sustainable urban development.

The programme began with a ‘nukkad natak’, followed by a ceremonial lamp lighting and the singing of the National Song, marking the formal opening of the summit.

Amit Kumar, Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, said that cities today serve as major engines of economic growth and innovation. He emphasised that urban areas play a crucial role in driving development and generating opportunities.

Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi also addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of building cities that are citizen-focused, environmentally responsible and technologically advanced. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government agencies, industry leaders and citizens to create sustainable and resilient urban ecosystems for the future.
