Mohali : Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa has approached the Chief Justice of India, urging a suo motu cognisance and a court-monitored investigation into the death of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, District Manager of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation, who died by suicide in Amritsar on March 21.
Bajwa highlighted the “deeply disturbing circumstances” surrounding Randhawa’s death, noting that the official had recorded a video before his death allegedly naming former Punjab minister Laljit Singh Bhullar and claiming that sustained harassment and coercion had forced him to take the extreme step. According to Bajwa’s letter, Randhawa had submitted formal complaints to senior authorities, including the Managing Director of the Warehousing Corporation and the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, but no effective measures were taken to address his grievances or provide protection. He described this as a “systemic breakdown” and raised concerns over negligence and possible complicity at higher administrative levels.
Bajwa also expressed apprehension regarding the credibility and impartiality of the ongoing state-led investigation. With elections approaching, he warned that the probe could be influenced, noting concerns about potential witness intimidation and evidence tampering.
He stressed the need for urgent judicial oversight to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
An FIR has already been registered naming Bhullar, his father, and others, but Bajwa contended that the investigation under state control lacks credibility. He urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the matter to restore public confidence and ensure accountability.
The Leader of Opposition emphasized that judicial supervision is essential to protect evidence, ensure impartiality, and guarantee justice for Randhawa, whose death has sparked widespread concern over workplace harassment and administrative negligence.
Bajwa’s move has added pressure on the state authorities to handle the case with transparency, as public attention grows over the circumstances leading to the tragic death and the alleged involvement of senior political figures.
The case has triggered political debates and calls for accountability, with opposition leaders highlighting systemic issues in governance and the need for independent investigations in sensitive cases involving public officials.
This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of administrative procedures and political accountability in Punjab, underscoring the growing demand for judicial intervention in high-profile cases.
