Two Injured as Falling Rocks Hit Taxi in Lahaul-Spiti

Shimla : Two passengers were injured after a taxi was struck by falling rocks in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district on Monday. The incident occurred near Mosuma Thetup Kurkur under Mahal Bok in the Lahaul sub-division, highlighting the risks posed by landslides and falling debris in hilly areas. According to officials, the taxi (registration number HP01KA3006) was suddenly hit by rocks that fell onto the vehicle while it was passing through the area.
The impact caused damage to the taxi and created panic among the occupants.

There were three persons in the vehicle at the time of the incident — driver Deepak Tamang and two passengers, Manojit Singh Roy and his wife Paulini Singha, who are residents of West Bengal. While the driver escaped unhurt, the two passengers sustained minor injuries due to the sudden rockfall.
Local authorities and emergency responders acted swiftly following the incident. The injured couple was immediately shifted to Regional Hospital Keylong, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. Doctors have confirmed that their injuries are minor and they are in stable condition.

Officials stated that such incidents are not uncommon in mountainous regions like Lahaul-Spiti, especially due to changing weather conditions and loose rocks along steep slopes. Travelers are often advised to exercise caution while driving through vulnerable stretches, particularly during periods of increased geological activity.
The damaged taxi was later removed from the site, and authorities ensured that the road was cleared for safe passage of other vehicles. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the need for preventive measures in landslide-prone areas.
Despite the sudden mishap, prompt response by local authorities helped prevent a more serious situation. The administration continues to monitor such areas closely to minimize risks for commuters and tourists traveling through the region.
