Elections for the Municipal Corporation Mohali and municipal councils of Kharar, Kurali, Naya Gaon, Zirakpur, Derabassi, Laldu and Banur will be held on May 26, District Election Officer Komal Mittal announced on Monday
A detailed review meeting was held with returning officers, assistant returning officers, police officials and election staff to ensure transparent conduct of the local body elections.
Nomination and polling schedule
As per the schedule issued by the Punjab State Election Commission, nominations will be accepted from May 13 to May 16 (11 am to 3 pm). Scrutiny of nominations will take place on May 18, while candidates can withdraw nominations till May 19. Voting will be held on May 26 from 8 am to 5 pm, and results will be declared on May 29 after counting.
Election preparedness and directions
The District Election Officer instructed SDMs to personally inspect polling booths and ensure all basic facilities are in place. Any deficiencies must be rectified immediately to avoid inconvenience to voters.
She also directed officials to ensure timely issuance of NOCs to candidates and stated that affidavits in lieu of NOCs should also be accepted to prevent unnecessary delays in the nomination process.
Administrative and security arrangements
Officials were directed to avoid overcrowding at nomination centres and strictly follow Election Commission guidelines. Candidate lists will be displayed after scrutiny, and voter lists must be kept readily available at all offices.
Special emphasis was laid on training of election staff, deployment of polling parties, secure handling of ballot boxes, and identification of counting centres.
Senior police officials, including SP Mohit Aggarwal and DSP Varinder Singh Khosa, were instructed to ensure adequate security arrangements at all stages of the election process, including nominations, polling booths, and strong rooms.
Appeal for peaceful elections
The District Election Officer urged all political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the Model Code of Conduct to ensure peaceful and incident-free elections across the district.
