Illegal Furniture Market on Phase 2–4 Road Sparks Concern

Mohali :

Residents have expressed strong concern over the rapid expansion of an alleged illegal furniture market along both sides of the dividing road connecting Phase-2 and Phase-4 in Mohali.
According to local residents, several furniture vendors, reportedly displaced from Chandigarh during anti-encroachment drives, have established businesses along the stretch in recent months. They allege that a large number of furniture items and temporary structures have been placed on public land, resulting in encroachments and traffic-related issues.
Residents claim that the market appears to be operating without the required permissions and has grown significantly in a short period. They say furniture goods displayed on both sides of the road have narrowed the available space for motorists and pedestrians, creating inconvenience and raising safety concerns.
Locals have questioned how the market has been allowed to expand so rapidly and have sought clarification on why the concerned authorities have not yet taken action. They allege that the continued growth of the market points to a lack of enforcement against unauthorised commercial activities.
Area residents have urged the Municipal Corporation and district administration to investigate the matter and take necessary action against any illegal encroachments. They have also called for strict enforcement of regulations governing the commercial use of public spaces.
Residents warned that if timely action is not taken, the market could continue to expand, leading to further traffic congestion, safety risks and disruption to the city’s planned infrastructure and public spaces.
