Overgrown Trees Hide Road Signboards, Safety Concerns Rise

Mohali :

Several direction signboards and traffic guidance boards across Mohali have become almost invisible due to unchecked growth of roadside trees, posing a serious challenge for commuters and raising concerns over road safety. Despite routine maintenance claims, the ground reality at many key intersections indicates that essential traffic infrastructure is being neglected.

A recent inspection revealed that a directional signboard has been almost completely hidden behind dense tree branches, making it difficult for motorists to identify routes well in advance. Such obstructions not only inconvenience to commuters but also create confusion for visitors, emergency service vehicles and outstation drivers who depend on these signboards for navigation.

Residents have expressed concern that hidden traffic and directional signs defeat the very purpose for which they are installed. During the monsoon season, when visibility is already reduced due to rain and poor weather, obscured signboards further increase the risk of traffic congestion and accidents.

*Atul Sharma, BJP leader and resident of Phase-2, Mohali,* said that the Municipal Corporation must take immediate corrective measures.

“Directional signboards are installed to guide motorists and ensure safe movement on city roads. When they are covered by overgrown trees, they become ineffective and can lead to confusion and accidents. The Municipal Corporation should conduct a comprehensive survey across the city, prune all obstructing branches, and ensure that every traffic and directional signboard remains clearly visible throughout the year,” he said.

Residents have urged the Municipal Corporation Mohali and the Horticulture Department to launch a special drive to trim overgrown trees, particularly at road intersections, roundabouts and major junctions. They have also demanded periodic inspections so that traffic signboards, speed limit boards, road name plates and directional indicators remain free from obstruction.

Citizens believe that maintaining the visibility of road signboards is a basic civic responsibility and an essential component of road safety. They have appealed to the authorities to act promptly before the situation results in avoidable accidents or inconvenience to commuters. But Who Cares????
