Punjab Congress Seva Dal Mohali General Secretary Vishal Sharma said that tackling drug abuse in Punjab requires long-term and concrete action rather than being limited to political yatras and allegations.
Referring to the ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, Sharma said every sincere effort against drug abuse should be welcomed, but employment opportunities, quality education, sports facilities, skill development, mental health support and stronger de-addiction and rehabilitation centres are essential to protect the state’s youth.
Sharma said preventing drug trafficking, particularly through Punjab’s international border, is a shared responsibility of the Centre and the state government. He called for stronger coordination between central agencies and Punjab Police and effective measures against cross-border trafficking and the use of drones.
He also urged the Centre to consider a dedicated rehabilitation package for Punjab, along with employment and skill-development programmes for youth and expansion of sports facilities in villages.
Sharma said Congress Seva Dal Mohali would consider undertaking social initiatives to spread awareness about drug abuse and encourage young people to engage in education, sports and other positive activities.
He appealed to political parties to work collectively on the issue and focus on keeping Punjab’s youth educated, employed and away from drugs.
