Mohali:
A major accident was averted when a truck carrying material for road recarpeting got stuck on the damaged road stretch between Diplast Chowk and Franco Lights in Phase 1, Mohali. Atul Sharma, BJP Punjab State Convenor of the Cooperative Cell, visited the spot and assessed the situation, raising concerns over road safety and alleged negligence by the concerned departments.
The road had reportedly been dug up several months ago by the Public Health Department for laying a pipeline. However, questions have now been raised over whether the road was properly restored after the completion of the work.
The truck had arrived for the road recarpeting work when it became stuck on the damaged stretch. The incident highlighted the potential danger to commuters and other road users due to inadequate restoration of roads after excavation.
Expressing concern, Sharma pointed to the alleged lack of coordination between the Public Health Department and the Municipal Corporation Mohali. The absence of officials from either department at the site also raised questions about the monitoring of public infrastructure projects and accountability.
He said repeated excavation, poor restoration and delayed repairs not only inconvenience residents but can also result in the wastage of taxpayers’ money and create serious safety hazards.
Sharma urged the concerned authorities to inspect the road immediately, ensure proper restoration and fix responsibility wherever negligence is established. He also stressed the need for better coordination between departments involved in public infrastructure projects.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of proper supervision, responsible use of public funds and prioritising public safety. Residents expect the authorities to take prompt corrective action to prevent further inconvenience and potential accidents.
