Mohali :
Senior Congress leader and former Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu has strongly criticized the ongoing demolition drive in Mohali’s Phase-11, accusing the AAP government and its agencies of acting in a high-handed and unlawful manner. He stated that the demolitions are undermining the livelihood and dignity of residents, small shopkeepers, and street vendors.
Sidhu alleged that GMADA is carrying out demolitions without issuing prior notices or following due legal process, calling the actions illegal, arbitrary, and unconstitutional. “This is nothing but bulldozer-style governance being imposed on hardworking people,” he said.
Citing Supreme Court rulings, including Olga Tellis vs Bombay Municipal Corporation, Sidhu emphasized that the right to livelihood is protected under Article 21 of the Constitution, and no eviction or demolition can be executed without proper notice, hearing, due process, and rehabilitation.
Highlighting widespread protests in Phase-11, he accused the AAP government of choosing coercion over consultation. “Court orders cannot be misused as an excuse for administrative arrogance. Enforcement must be fair, humane, and lawful,” he said.
Balbir Singh Sidhu declared that Congress would actively oppose the demolitions politically and legally, standing with affected residents in all democratic forums. He demanded that the government halt the drive immediately, restrain GMADA, and initiate dialogue with the residents and vendors.
The Congress party stands firmly with the people. Law must protect citizens, not terrorize them,” Sidhu said, warning that accountability would be fixed for any injustice under the AAP regime.
