India LPG Crisis: 60% of Restaurants May Shut by Friday as Commercial Cylinder  Supply Halts; Govt Invokes EC Act to Prioritize Households

Mohali : A shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders has begun affecting several areas of Mohali and Chandigarh, causing inconvenience to both residents and commercial establishments dependent on LPG for daily operations.
Residents reported delays in the delivery of domestic LPG cylinders over the past few days, forcing many households to wait longer than usual after booking refills. In some areas, consumers have had to visit gas agencies repeatedly to check availability, while several households have been asked to wait until fresh stock arrives.
The shortage has also affected restaurants, roadside eateries, sweet shops and other small food businesses across the Tricity. Many establishments rely on commercial LPG cylinders and have faced difficulties obtaining timely refills. Some restaurant owners said they have been forced to reduce cooking operations or make temporary arrangements due to limited supply.
Gas distributors acknowledged that supply has slowed due to logistical constraints and distribution adjustments. Sources said priority is currently being given to domestic consumers, which has tightened the availability of commercial cylinders.Meanwhile, Bharat Petroleum said it has taken steps to enhance LPG production amid global supply disruptions and assured that domestic consumers and essential sectors are being prioritised. Officials added that additional stocks are expected soon, which may help normalise the supply situation in the coming days.
