Mohali : The office of Droupadi Murmu has declined a request from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) seeking an appointment for a delegation to meet the President, citing a “paucity of time,” sources said today.
According to sources, a senior Trinamool Congress leader had earlier written to the President requesting a meeting with a 12-member delegation.
The delegation intended to brief the President about welfare initiatives undertaken by the Government of West Bengal for tribal communities and highlight the state’s efforts toward inclusive development.
However, the President’s office reportedly declined the request due to scheduling constraints. Following the rejection, the Trinamool Congress is said to have written again seeking an appointment next week.
The development comes days after a public face-off between the President and the West Bengal government during a conference on tribal welfare held in Siliguri.
During the visit, the President reportedly raised concerns over protocol lapses, including the absence of Mamata Banerjee or any of her cabinet colleagues at the reception in Bagdogra.
Political observers say the meeting request was seen as an attempt by the TMC to ease tensions and present details of the state’s welfare programmes for tribal communities.
