Congress Slams Modi Govt Over Silence on Khamenei Killing

PM doesn't want to antagonise US, Israeli 'friend': Cong slams 'silence' on Khamenei assassination - The Tribune

New Dehli : The Congress today criticised the Modi government for its “silence” following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, accusing New Delhi of avoiding confrontation with the US and Israel.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said India had condemned Iran’s attacks on Gulf states but remained completely silent on the US-Israeli strike that killed Khamenei on February 28, 2026. He pointed out that neither the Prime Minister nor the External Affairs Minister has issued any statement, and Parliament has not made an obituary reference to the late leader.
Ramesh recalled India’s response to the death of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in May 2024. At that time, the government observed a one-day mourning, and Parliament held an obituary reference when it convened in July 2024, highlighting a stark contrast with the current situation.
The Congress leader emphasised that Iran is an important member of the BRICS+ forum, over which India holds the Presidency this year. He argued that India’s silence undermines its diplomatic standing and called for a more vocal and principled response from New Delhi.
Political analysts note that the criticism reflects growing concerns about India’s positioning amid heightened tensions in West Asia, especially following the US-Israeli operation against Iran’s leadership.
They highlight that India’s strategic interests in the region, including energy security and trade routes, make it essential for the government to carefully balance diplomatic messaging while maintaining neutrality.
The Congress has urged the government to acknowledge the geopolitical implications of the assassination and issue a formal statement, reinforcing India’s commitment to international norms and dialogue.
Observers say this episode could shape discussions within Parliament and influence India’s broader foreign policy approach in the West Asian region.
