Water Supply Row Sparks Political Row Over GMADA Charges

Mohali :

The controversy over water supply to Sohana village has escalated after GMADA’s decision to impose charges for water being supplied from Sector-77 Water Works sparked strong political opposition and public concern.
According to official communication, GMADA has approved the supply of 3 lakh gallons per day to Sohana village through a pipeline connection from a 24-inch main line. The water will be supplied via a 200 mm diameter pipeline, with charges fixed as per PUDA policy at ₹14.77 per kilolitre, along with a 5% annual increase.
The letter also states that the responsibility for laying pipelines, installation of meters, maintenance, and related infrastructure work will rest with the Public Health Department, which will bear the associated costs.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from former Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi, who alleged unequal treatment of areas within Mohali. He argued that Sohana village and Sector-78 fall under the Municipal Corporation and questioned why water billing authority is being retained outside the civic body.
Bedi also pointed out that residents in other parts of Mohali receive certain concessions in water billing based on property size, but similar relief is not being extended in GMADA-controlled zones, calling the policy “unfair and inconsistent.”
He further suggested that if GMADA is unable to manage the system efficiently, control of the Sector-78 booster plant should be handed over to the Municipal Corporation for better coordination and uniform billing.
The issue has now become a growing administrative and political concern, with residents of Sohana village also raising complaints over water supply and demanding an immediate resolution.
