Residents Angry Over Congress Grass Spread

Mohali :

Residents, workers and daily commuters in Industrial Area Phase-1, Mohali, have expressed serious concern over the rampant growth of hazardous Congress grass (Parthenium) along public footpaths, accusing civic authorities and elected representatives of turning a blind eye to the worsening situation
Large stretches of footpaths in the area have been completely overtaken by the noxious weed, rendering them unusable and forcing pedestrians to walk on busy roads, thereby exposing them to the risk of accidents.
Despite repeated complaints by residents and industrial workers, neither the Municipal Corporation nor the elected representatives have initiated any effective measures to remove the weed and restore the footpaths for public use.
Congress grass is known to cause severe health problems, including skin allergies, respiratory ailments, asthma and other allergic reactions. The weed spreads rapidly during the monsoon season and poses a significant public health threat if left unchecked.
Residents allege that while promises of development, cleanliness and better civic amenities are routinely made during elections, basic issues affecting public safety and health continue to be neglected. The prevailing condition in Industrial Area Phase-1 reflects administrative apathy and lack of accountability.
Citizens have urged the Municipal Corporation, GMADA and other concerned departments to immediately launch a special drive to eradicate Congress grass from the area and ensure regular maintenance of footpaths.
How long will residents continue to suffer due to official inaction? If timely steps are not taken, the problem could escalate into a major health hazard during the ongoing monsoon season,” said residents.
Residents remarked with anguish, “The Congress grass continues to grow unchecked, complaints continue to pile up, But Who Cares?”
