MC Plans Change in Public Toilet Maintenance Policy

Mohali :

The Mohali Municipal Corporation is set to bring a key proposal in its upcoming House meeting on June 26, under which cleaning of public toilets in markets and public places will no longer be assigned to women sanitation workers. Instead, the task will be handled by male employees.
The proposal has been prepared following field inspections by the Joint Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner, along with meetings held with sanitary inspectors. It will be formally tabled in the first House meeting to be chaired by newly elected Mayor Sarabjit Samana.
According to officials, the decision is linked to concerns raised during inspections regarding workload distribution, availability of staff, and safety issues faced by women workers, particularly in male and female public toilets. The plan also proposes deployment of additional staff in double shifts to improve sanitation services.
Alongside this, the civic body is also considering the formation of an authority to hand over maintenance of city parks to Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), subject to government approval.
The House meeting is expected to also take up several other agenda items, including the formation of the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976. The committee will include the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Municipal Commissioner, and two nominated members from the House.
In addition, proposals for compassionate appointments will also be discussed. These include the appointment of Rupendra, son of former sanitation worker Bikram Pal, as sanitation worker, and Manjeet Kaur, daughter of former chowkidar Malkit Singh, as clerk (Group C), under compassionate grounds.
Officials said the decisions, if approved, aim to improve civic administration and streamline workforce management in the city.
