Mohali :
BJP leader and Phase 2 resident Atul Sharma has urged the Mohali Municipal Corporation and Mohali Police to introduce a comprehensive monitoring and verification system for the growing number of street vendors entering residential localities.
Sharma said that while street vendors play an important role in providing essential services, the unchecked movement of unidentified vendors in residential areas raises genuine security concerns, particularly for senior citizens, women, and children.
He suggested that the Municipal Corporation and Police should establish fixed time slots for vendors to enter residential areas and maintain a proper database of all street vendors, including their identity, address, vehicle details, and the areas they visit regularly. Vendors operating through auto-rickshaws, rehri carts, bicycles, or on foot should undergo mandatory police verification before being allowed to conduct business in residential colonies.
Atul Sharma further recommended that Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and the respective Municipal Councillors should be informed about the verified vendors operating in their localities. Such coordination would help residents identify genuine vendors while discouraging unauthorized or suspicious movement.
Highlighting Mohali’s demographic profile, Sharma said that the city has a large population of elderly residents, many of whom live alone during the day. A robust vendor verification and monitoring mechanism would enhance public safety without affecting the livelihoods of genuine vendors.
He appealed to the Mohali Municipal Corporation and Mohali Police to act proactively and implement a transparent registration and verification system that balances public convenience with the safety and security of residents.
