Mayor Jeeti Sidhu Slams Bulldozer Drive, Calls for Legal and Humane Action

Mohali :

Mayor Amarjit Singh ‘Jeeti’ Sidhu today criticised the ongoing demolition drive against illegal encroachments, stating that using bulldozers to raze homes is neither legal nor humane and that all action must follow due process.
Speaking after a meeting with Mohali Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sandhu and councillors, the Mayor also raised concerns over delays and alleged discrimination in the execution of development work orders, demanding timely and transparent implementation.
Sidhu warned that sudden demolitions could endanger residents, including senior citizens and the ill, and harm the city’s social fabric. He suggested issuing notices and allowing 60–90 days for compliance, followed by legal measures such as disconnection of utilities if violations persist.
Questioning GMADA’s role, the Mayor alleged irregular approvals of building plans, especially in new sectors like Aerocity and IT City, and accused authorities of double standards by sparing influential encroachers while targeting weaker sections.
Announcing a Municipal Corporation House meeting, Sidhu said responsibilities of GMADA and the civic body would be clearly defined to ensure lawful, peaceful governance. “A city is not beautified by bulldozers, but by law and justice,” he said.
Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal alleged that influential individuals have illegally occupied large tracts of land, including government parks, and called for strict, impartial action against them.
