Mohali :
In a move aimed at promoting reading culture and encouraging intellectual growth among citizens, Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh today laid the foundation stone for the construction of four new government libraries in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, Kulwant Singh thanked Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for launching the initiative to establish libraries across the state. He said the project would play a crucial role in nurturing reading habits among children and youth, and reflects the Punjab government’s strong commitment to education and knowledge development.
Under the project, one library each will be constructed in Sectors 77, 78, 79, and 80 of Mohali. A total budget of ₹1.40 crore has been sanctioned under the Municipal Development Fund (MDF), with approximately ₹35 lakh allocated for each library.
Each library will have a built-up area of about 1,800 square feet and will include a spacious reading hall measuring 32×27 feet, separate washrooms for men and women, an office, pantry, and storage facilities.
The MLA informed that the construction work is expected to be completed within three months. Once operational, these libraries will function as knowledge centres for students, youth preparing for competitive examinations, and the general public.
Several local leaders and dignitaries, including Surinder Singh Roda, Harsangat Singh, Parminder Singh, Kamaljit Kaur, Kulwant Kaur Komal, Roopa Sohana, Randeep Singh, councillor Gurpreet Kaur, Avtar Singh Mauli, Harjot Gabbar, Charanjit Kaur, Sukhchain Singh, Major Singh, and B.S.
