Sohana Hospital organised a special Glaucoma Awareness Walk in Mohali to spread awareness about the eye disease commonly known as “Kala Motia” (glaucoma). The walk was led by the hospital’s COO and Senior Cataract & Refractive Surgeon Dr. Amanpreet Kaur and witnessed enthusiastic participation from doctors, hospital staff, patients, and local residents.
The event was held as part of World Glaucoma Awareness Week, observed from March 8 to 14, 2026, with the aim of educating people about the importance of regular eye check-ups and early detection of glaucoma. Medical experts describe glaucoma as the “silent thief of sight”, as the disease can damage vision gradually without noticeable symptoms in its early stages.
During the awareness walk, participants carried placards and banners highlighting the need for timely eye screening. Special emphasis was placed on encouraging individuals above the age of 40, as well as those suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, or having a family history of glaucoma, to undergo regular eye examinations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Amanpreet Kaur said that nearly 80 million people worldwide are affected by glaucoma, and about half of them are unaware that they have the disease. She noted that in India, one out of every eight people is at risk of developing glaucoma. “The most concerning aspect of glaucoma is that it progresses without pain or warning signs, which is why timely screening and regular eye check-ups are extremely important,” she said.
Dr. Kaur further informed that as part of the Glaucoma Awareness Week campaign, Sohana Hospital is conducting free eye pressure screening tests from March 8 to 14 to help people detect the condition at an early stage and protect their vision.
The event concluded with an interactive session where doctors addressed queries from the public and shared information about the latest treatment options and preventive measures for glaucoma. The initiative aimed to encourage people to prioritise eye health and adopt preventive care to safeguard their eyesight.
