Anganwadi Workers Await Pending Honorarium Payments

Chandigarh :

Over 900 Anganwadi workers and helpers in Chandigarh have reportedly not received their honorarium for the past four months, causing growing concern and financial hardship among employees.
According to the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union and the Federation of UT Employees and Workers, the workers have not been paid since December 2025, despite repeated assurances from the administration.
Delegation Meets Social Welfare Director
A delegation from the Federation met the Director of the Social Welfare Department, Ms. Radhika Singh, on May 6, urging immediate release of pending payments. Officials stated that the Director assured prompt action, but the honorarium has still not been disbursed.
Demand for DC Rate Pay Structure
Alongside pending payments, the union has also renewed its demand for implementation of “DC rates” (Deputy Commissioner rates), similar to models followed in states like Puducherry and Kerala, citing increased workload and rising responsibilities.
Protest Warning Amid Delays
Earlier, the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union had announced a proposed sit-in protest on April 9 over an eight-point charter of demands, including timely wages and pay revision. Following discussions with then Director Ms. Palika Arora on April 7, assurances were given regarding resolution within a fixed timeframe. However, no formal action order has been issued so far.
Growing Discontent Among Workers
Due to continued delays, resentment is reportedly growing among workers, with unions warning of further agitation if payments are not released soon.
Federation leaders Gopal Dutt Joshi (President), Rajendra Katoch (Chairman), and Harkesh Chand (General Secretary) have appealed for immediate disbursal of honorarium to avoid escalation of protests.
The situation highlights ongoing concerns over wage delays and working conditions faced by frontline welfare workers in the Union Territory.
