Chandigarh :
After the contract of Lions Company, which was handling the city’s sanitation services in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, came to an end, an important decision was taken today to ensure uninterrupted cleanliness operations in the city.
Amid concerns over who would manage the sanitation system, Mayor Saurabh Joshi held a key meeting with representatives of sanitation workers’ unions and related stakeholders.
Following the meeting, it was decided that all sanitation workers previously employed under Lions Company will continue their duties under a new government agency. The Mayor also issued an official order in this regard.
According to the Municipal Corporation, there will be no change in the salaries, working conditions, or benefits of the workers. However, the new arrangement will apply only to sanitation workers, while other staff members of the company will not be included in this transition.
It is worth noting that the issue of renewing Lions Company’s contract had sparked heated debates during the Municipal Corporation House meeting. Opposition councillors strongly opposed the renewal, leading to the eventual decision not to extend the contract, which officially ended on Sunday.
After the contract expiry, uncertainty had grown among sanitation workers regarding their jobs and salaries. However, the new decision has brought relief to the workers.
The Municipal Corporation has assured that sanitation services across the city will continue smoothly without any disruption in any sector.
