In a major step towards strengthening preventive healthcare for senior citizens, a dedicated Adult and Elderly Vaccination Clinic has been launched at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32), Chandigarh.
Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria formally inaugurated the facility today. The clinic has been set up in collaboration with the Rotary Club Chandigarh Central and the Department of Community Medicine, GMCH-32, and will operate from the geriatric OPD in Block B of the hospital.
Health experts say that while childhood immunisation is widely followed in India, vaccination for older adults is often neglected despite their increased vulnerability to infections due to weakened immunity. Individuals above 60 years of age—especially those suffering from diabetes, heart disease, asthma, COPD, or other chronic conditions—are at higher risk of severe complications from common infections.
The new clinic aims to address this gap by offering counselling, expert consultation, and vaccination services under one roof, eliminating the need for elderly patients to visit multiple departments. Doctors believe the initiative will help reduce hospital admissions, complications, and healthcare costs while improving the overall quality of life for senior citizens.
Medical professionals have urged families to bring elderly members for consultation and ensure timely vaccinations, stressing that preventive care is as important for older adults as it is for children.
