One-Hour Rain Exposes Civic Body’s Monsoon Preparedness

Mohali :

Just an hour of rainfall today exposed what residents described as the inadequate pre-monsoon preparations of the Municipal Corporation (MC) in Mohali, with severe waterlogging reported across several parts of Ward No. 50.
Roads in the area were inundated, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters as vehicles struggled to navigate waterlogged and potholed stretches. Residents said the flooding raised serious questions about the civic body’s claims of undertaking pre-monsoon cleaning and maintenance work.
The issue, locals said, is not new. Social activist Atul Sharma had earlier approached the Permanent Lok Adalat, seeking directions for the Municipal Corporation to ensure that road gullies and drainage systems across the city were cleaned before the onset of the monsoon. Despite those efforts, residents alleged that many drainage points remain clogged, resulting in water accumulation even after a short spell of rain.
People living in Ward No. 50 expressed concern that if one hour of rainfall could cause such extensive waterlogging, heavier or prolonged showers during the monsoon could lead to flood-like conditions in the area’s residential, commercial and industrial localities.
Residents have demanded an immediate inspection of the drainage cleaning works reportedly carried out by the Municipal Corporation and sought accountability from officials responsible for ensuring proper maintenance of the city’s stormwater drainage system. They also urged the civic body to take urgent corrective measures to prevent recurring waterlogging during the monsoon season.
