GMADA Holds Crucial Meeting on Damaged Road Near Mohali Bus Stand; High Court Hearing on September 2

Mohali:

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) on Tuesday held a crucial meeting regarding the long-pending issue of the badly damaged road adjoining the Interstate Bus Terminus-cum-Commercial Complex in Phase 6, Mohali.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of GMADA Chief Administrator Sandeep Rishi at PUDA Bhawan, Sector 62, SAS Nagar, following directions issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in connection with the matter.

According to an official communication issued by GMADA on August 14, representatives of the Municipal Corporation, GMADA’s Legal Adviser, companies associated with the bus stand project and former Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi, who had approached the High Court over the issue, were invited to the meeting.

Bedi said that during the meeting, the GMADA Chief Administrator directed the concerned officials to prepare a concrete and practical plan for a permanent solution to the road problem.

According to Bedi, the Chief Administrator made it clear that the issue could no longer remain limited to discussions and meetings and that a workable solution must be prepared and implemented on the ground. He stressed that the deteriorating condition of the road was directly linked to the safety of commuters and motorists and required urgent intervention.

Next High Court Hearing on September 2

Bedi said that he had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court over the condition of the road and that the subsequent meetings convened by GMADA were being held in compliance with the court’s directions.

The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for September 2, 2026. Bedi said that the authorities would be required to place before the court details of the action taken so far and the proposed plan for resolving the issue.

He further said that the GMADA Chief Administrator has directed officials to hold another meeting before September 2. The date for the next meeting has not yet been finalised.

Road Problem Pending for Years

The road issue has remained unresolved for several years. In May 2023, Bedi had raised concerns over the poor condition of the road adjoining the bus stand. At the time, a significant portion of the approximately 30-foot-wide road was reportedly damaged, with nearly 20 feet of the road affected.

Following the matter reaching the High Court, GMADA began bringing various stakeholders together to explore a solution. In 2025, following court directions, representatives of the Mohali Municipal Corporation, Traffic Police, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and companies associated with the bus stand project were also called for discussions.

The reduced width of the road and its impact on traffic movement have remained key concerns.

“The Work May Be Given to a Good Company, But the Work Must Be Done”

During Tuesday’s meeting, Bedi suggested that the repair and required engineering work could be entrusted to an experienced and technically competent company. However, he stressed that the priority should be to ensure that the work is actually carried out on the ground.

Bedi expressed concern that further delay could worsen the condition of the road. He said that one side of the road had already sunk and that issues had also arisen regarding the use of the affected portion by the bus stand.

He warned that if the other side of the road or the adjoining structure were also affected, the situation could become considerably more serious.

The road is an important connectivity route from Mohali towards the major highway network and further towards Himachal Pradesh. Its poor condition has been causing inconvenience to commuters and motorists and could pose additional safety risks if the damage is allowed to worsen.

Bedi said that if concrete and effective action is not taken before the September 2 hearing, he would, through his counsel, place before the High Court a detailed account of the action taken by the authorities.
